Ocotillo Fence Panels
About the Ocotillo Plant:
The Fouquieria Splendens, known as Ocotillo (oh-koh-TEE-yo) are native to the southwestern United States and northwest Mexico. In the United States it can be found in California, south of Nevada, Arizona and Texas. In Mexico the Ocotillo is native to the states of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango and Coahuila. Ocotillo is a drought tolerant plant and can withstand harsh conditions, stems can grow up to 20 feet tall.
Ocotillo use in Fencing:
Ocotillo fences make very good coyote and privacy fences. Fences are made by cutting Ocotillo branches intertwined with wire to keep them together. They can be set against an existing fence or stand on their own with a post every 5 to 10 feet for support, depending on your install. The branches are planted into the ground to make a strong foundation for the fence. Some of the branches will take root, bloom and grow, some may never take root but remain strong for many years. The branches will never become a full plant, although occasionally some will branch out, they can be trimmed or left alone for a for a more natural look.

How to make a fence:
Once established: Little water is needed for Ocotillos and usually nature will do its thing in southwestern US. Some branches will take root on their own, however if you want to give it a push please follow our recommendations. Ocotillos can gather water through their branches, we recommend hosing the Ocotillo Fence top to bottom once a month during cold weather and about 2-4 times a month during the hot months, you may skip during the monsoon.
Soak the ocotillos all around, but irrigation systems may cause more harm than good. Keeping the roots wet all the time may kill the plant and occasionally they will rot, drip systems or regular frequent irrigation systems may be a bit too much.
Some branches may not bloom or take root the first year, but it may later. Some branches will spontaneously sprout out even after several years of being cut from their original shrub. So don't give up on it so quick.
